The cave of Agios Gerassimos
Located in the area of Lassi, in Argostoli, this natural cave is where Saint Gerassimos, patron of the island, stayed until he went to the Omala valley where he reorganised the monastery known as Agios Gerassimos.
A small church has been built into the cave in honour of the saint and attracts many pilgrims; from there, one can enjoy a fantastic view over the sea.
The Monastery of Our Lady Themata
Built during the 11th century nearby the village of Makrytotika, in the middle of a verdant forest, on the slopes of Agia Dinati.
According to popular stories, the people of the island where praying the miraculous icon of the Virgin Themata (meaning "matters" in Greek) to ask solutions for their problems.
The Monastery of Panagia Atrou
The Monastery of Panagia Atrou is dedicated to the Virgin Mary and is standing at an altitude of 500 metres, on the top of a green hill, a few kilometres of the village of Poros.
First built during the 8th century, it is the oldest monastery of Kefalonia and is supposed to have been destroyed and rebuilt 17 times.
The monastery celebrates its feast day on the 8th of September.
The Monastery of Agrilion
The Monastery of Agrilion is standing on the top of the hill of Sami and is dedicated to the Hyperayia Theotokos.
It was built during the 18th century on the site where was found the miraculous icon of Agios Theotokos was found, in 1722, by two shepherds who decided, after the discovering, to dedicate themselves to the monastic life.
The church of Estavromenos
Built in 1618 on the ruins of an older monastery in the village of Pessada, the Church of Estavromenos (Crucified Christ) is dedicated to the Holy Cross. After the death of the last nun, the monastery has been abandoned.
Captain Corelli's Mandolin
The novel "Captain Corelli's Mandolin" was written by Louis de Bernieres who is also the author of "The War of Don Emmanuel's Nether Parts", "The Troublesome Offspring of Cardinal Guzman" and "Senor Vivo and the Coca Lord".
"Captain Corelli's Mandolin" was adapted to a movie in 2001, directed by John Madden (who also directed the movie "Shakespeare in Love"), with Nicholas Cage and Penelope Cruz.
The story of the italian captain Corelli takes place on Kefalonia during the invasion of Mussolini; an entire village was reconstituted for the movie as it was during those times, before the devastating earthquake of 1953.
The novel (and the movie) is a romanced history between an Italian officer, Captain Antonio Corelli and a young Greek girl.
Corelli has come to the island with the Italian army and the most precious thing of its life is his mandolin.
Pelagia is the daughter of the doctor of the island (Doctor Iannis).
She is an educated and strong-willing woman who falls under the charm of the Italian Captain.
Despite the engagement of the young girl with a young Greek fisherman, Corelli and Pelagia are slowly falling in love and their feelings grow when the supposed fiance joins the Greek Partisans.
Corelli's love for the Greek girl and its attraction to the community of the village make him wonder about why he is fighting.
With the intensification of the war, Corelli and Pelagia have to choose between their love and the allegiance to their countries.
