The Church of Agios Gerassimos
This church is the most sacred and venerated church of the island of Kefalonia. Under the impressive monastery one can see a two-room cave where Agios Gerassimos, the saint patron of the island, used to live and pray. This cave is visited every year by thousands of pilgrims. Agios Gerassiomos was famous for its miraculous skills with people suffering from mental illnesses. The imposing church was built before 1470 and is located in the verdant valley of Omala..

The Church of the Virgin Mary Lagouvarda
Situated in the village of Markopoulos, the church of the Virgin Mary Lagouvarda was built on the site where a monastery used to stand and which had been destroyed by the Turks. Urban legend says that in 1705 the monastery was attacked by pirates and the frighten nuns prayed the Virgin to be changed into snakes in order to escape from the cruelty of the pirates. Their prayers where answered and, at the sight of the snakes, the pirates run away; since then, the nuns-snakes return each year to the monastery, bringing good luck and prosperity to the village. This legend explains the phenomenon that happened every August the 15th, on the Virgin Mary’s feast day: a large number of harmless snakes come around the monastery just for this day and then disappear.

Assos village
The charming village of Assos is located in the west part of the island of Kefalonia and is one of the most picturesque villages of the island. The warm and welcoming atmosphere of the village is increased by a couple of taverns which are overlooking the bay and by the beautiful surroundings which are dominated by the ruins of a Venetian castle from the 16th century.

The Castle of Agios Georges
This 13th century castle stands on a hill at an altitude of 300 metres, nearby the village of Peratata and was built in order to fortify the old capital of the island. The castle successively came under the assault and domination of the Byzantines, the Franks, the Turks and the Venetians. Its total surface area is of 16.000 square metres and its walls are 600 metres long. Inside the castle is a tower called the “Old Fortress” that used to be the throne of the Venetian Lord and to serve as a catholic church.

Mount Enos
Mount Enos (Aenos) is a good-sized mountain, 1628m in height, with spectacular views, and a narrow, winding road to the summit. We visited it on a not-so sunny day, and reached the end of the paved road, part of the way up it, fog was blowing across the mountain top, and the plants looking frosted and cold.
