Alaties
Alaties is a small beach on the west side of north Kefalonia. In the village of Maganos we turn left (coming from Argostoli), and then follow the signs. The road is turnpike but it is quite winding, so one should drive slow. Past a few picturesque villages, we find the final turn to Alaties, when we are astonished watching from such a height the Ionian sea.
The beach is not long and it is surrounded by white rocks. It has pebbles, but during some days it is not very clean because of the open sea that brings in tar.
Alaties means “a salty place”. This name comes from the complex of rocks nearby, in the concavities of which, the sea salt dries. Moreover, where the concavities are bigger, the water that is contained is very healing. The surrounding place is arranged in a couple of planes planted with pines.
There is also a nice tavern in Alaties, good for lunch or even for a dinner under the stars.
Please bear in mind that Alaties are not very suitable for scuba diving, because outside the gulf, there are underwater currents. |

Asos beach, (Assos)
The beach of Assos can be described as a “family” beach, as it is located at the centre of the village, facing the peninsula of the Castle, thus giving the impression of a protected lake. It is covered with pebbles and the seabed is very shallow and covered with white sand. Exactly behind the beach, at a few meters distance, there is a row of picturesque buildings, which are cafe’s and shops.
The beach is quite crowded and it is very suitable for children, given that it is very safe.
However, for those who wish to have “their own beach” there is a surprise. You can rent a boat from Assos and go to the wonderful isolated beaches of the area!. |

Emplisi, (Fiskardo)
Emplisi is probably the most crowded beach of north Kefalonia, since it is very close to Fiscardo (just 1,5 klm). It's not a sandy beach like Makrys Gialos and most of the beaches at the southern part of the island. It's a rocky beach that is preferred by the locals. Cypresses and olive trees come close to the seashore. The water is crystal clear and the seabed is shallow (3-8 metres deep), covered with sand.
There is a road to the beach, and there is enough space for car park. Very close to Emplisi there is a hotel with a pool bar as well as a nice restaurant.

Foki, (Fiskardo)
Foki is a beach located at the outskirts of Fiscardo, on the road to Tselentata. Foki is a big gulf with a view to Ithaca, and is surrounded by a cypress forest as well as olive trees which reach the beach.
The mouth of the gulf is bedded with pebbles and on the right side there is a path which leads to successive rocky planes. The sea is safe and the sea bed is shallow (5-15 metres), even though it is covered by seaweed. However, the brave ones will be rewarded swimming towards the cave near the exit of the gulf.
A few years ago, Foki was a beach suitable for free camping, but nowadays there are no tents. The beach offers no extra facilities, but at a very close distance there is a nice restaurant. The car park is quite spacious, even though during the high season, there might be some difficulty. Fiscardo is very close anyway (300 - 700 metres), so Foki is also accessible on foot.
